Zero Waste Cropped Shirt
Are you interested in making a garment without having any awkward leftover pieces of fabric?
Zero Waste patterns are designed in such a way to use every piece of fabric.
Try the Zero Waste Cropped Shirt by Birgitte Helmersson across three sessions. The pattern uses no more than one metre of fabric and available in UK sizes 8 - 24.
Jenny will guide you through the trickier steps (including the maths) so you can leave with a completed garment. You might even have ideas for future versions - sleeve hacks, tie fronts or maybe a different type of fabric.
What skill level should I be?
This class is aimed at a confident beginner. This is someone who is happy using straight stitch and zig-zag on your machine. You have some basic experience or understanding of dressmaking, but you do not need loads to be able to do this class. If you aren’t sure, please get in contact.
The shirt requires buttonholes. Students should be familiar with this function on their machine, even if they aren’t confident using it yet. Jenny can provide a machine to complete this function in session 3.
The Pattern
The cropped shirt has a boxy feel, with 3 buttons, with lots of ways you could hack the pattern to make it your own. Students will be provided a copy of the pattern instructions as part of the course. Because it is a Zero Waste Pattern, there are no pattern pieces - we will draw the pattern pieces on the fabric before cutting the pieces out.
The pattern lends itself to cotton fabrics - I’ve made it from an old cotton duvet, a patterned linen and a drape viscose with lovely results.
Jenny will provide fabric requirements when you sign up so you can choose your own fabric and buttons to bring along for the workshop. Fabrics must be 135-160cm wide.

This class will be delivered over three 3-hour lessons - you must be able to attend all three sessions to complete your shirt.
