It’s not just a basket; the pattern comes with instructions to make three variations which are perfect for using as storage or as reusable gift bags.
“Zero waste” is the concept of using up every thread of a predetermined size of fabric to create a garment or item. Some patterns are considered “low waste” as they use most parts of a fabric with a few remnants leftover.
This pattern has no printed paper pieces. You measure and mark your cutting lines direct onto your fabric pieces. It involves a little bit of maths which Jenny guides you through at every step from marking the pattern, cutting out and sewing up!
“Lovely, simple make that has lots of options for your creativity together with the bonus of not creating lots of waste. Win, win!” - pattern tester
Please don’t panic! The maths is very basic with simple numbers. You are talked through each step so you are successful with your sewing.
“…the chart helped me as maths not my strong point, but I was able to work out the biggest size I could get from my fabric scrap…” - pattern tester
The sewing pattern can be adapted for different finishes, depending on what kind of closure you might want to add to the basket, if any.
The Zero Waste Basket instructions covers three versions:
• Standard basket
• Drawstring basket
• Button & loop pouch
Jenny provides some creative ideas to adapt the basket in a number of different ways; from fabric considerations to extra little details.
The basket pattern is a simple pattern with a lot of creative potential!
“I love how you cut it out - that was a little bit of genius” - pattern tester
The pattern is aimed at confident beginner sewists. You do not need any experience of zero waste sewing patterns. The instructions are thorough so you are supported at every step.
If you are a more experienced sewist, there are one-page summary of instructions you can follow.
The seam allowances on this pattern changes at various steps, so keep a close eye on the instructions.
“It’s my first time making anything from a zero waste pattern and it was the perfect introduction!” - pattern tester
Fabric Choices
The pattern requires two pieces of fabric; main fabric and lining. You will follow the size chart (and little bit of basic maths) to work out fabric sizes depending on your desired final size.
The pattern is perfect for all cottons. Lighter-weight fabrics may need to be interfaced whilst heavier fabrics (denim, cord) may hold their own strength.
The pattern is not suitable for directional prints.
Interfacing is optional depending on your desired final structure.
